The National Medical Commission (NMC), which was established to address concerns of transparency in the previous Medical Council of India, has been found to be in violation of the NMC Act 2019. The act requires the chairperson and members of the commission to disclose their assets and liabilities upon assuming and leaving office, with these statements to be made publicly available on the NMC website.

A recent RTI application sought information regarding the disclosures made by the chairman and members of the NMC in accordance with Section 6(6) of the NMC Act 2019, as well as details about any members who had resigned. Despite the application being filed on April 6, no response was received from the NMC. As a result, an appeal was subsequently filed on May 7.

The need for transparency and accountability in the operations of the NMC was emphasized in a report by the 92nd Parliamentary Standing Committee on Health, which called for the dissolution of the previous Medical Council of India. The committee recommended the appointment of professionals with impeccable reputations and integrity through a rigorous and independent selection process, citing concerns over the opaque and biased composition of the previous council.

Dr. KV Babu, an ophthalmologist from Kerala and the RTI applicant, expressed disappointment with the NMCs lack of responsiveness. He highlighted that despite the intention to improve transparency, the NMC has failed to provide necessary information on its website, respond to emails, or address RTI requests.
